Overview
Voters elect five Board of Education members by geographic area to serve four-year terms.
The duties of the Board include adopting the annual budget, approving all expenditures, establishing district policy, authorizing employment of personnel, approving textbooks and courses of study, and approving new and innovative academic initiatives.
Regular meetings of the Board are generally held on the first and third Wednesdays of each month at 5 p.m. in the Community Room of the District Administration Building, 1515 Hughes Way, Long Beach, CA 90810. To contact a Board member, call (562) 997-8240.
Board of Education meetings are televised on local cable channels. Charter Cable Channel 96 serves Long Beach and Signal Hill; Time Warner Cable Channel 35 serves Lakewood; and Verizon FiOS Channel 47 serves Long Beach, Lakewood, Signal Hill, Los Alamitos and surrounding communities. Broadcast times are noon and midnight on Monday and Wednesday, 9 a.m. and 9 p.m. on Tuesday and 8 a.m. and 8 p.m. on Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Meetings are also televised in Avalon, Catalina Island on Catalina CATV Channel 49 on Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 5 p.m. and Saturday at 9 a.m. or immediately following the City Council broadcast. The meetings are also streamed live on the district's YouTube Channel.
